Sex, Lies and Puerto Vallarta PVNN
| 'Sex, Lies & Spinnakers' can be purchased at local bookstores and through Amazon.com in both paperback and Kindle e-book formats. | | Puerto Vallarta figures heavily in Sex, Lies & Spinnakers a new novel by local author Steve Van Slyke. An ensemble cast of American, Canadian and Mexican characters weave their way from anchored sailboats at the mouth of the Rio Salado estuary near the navy base, to Marina Vallarta, the Malecσn and the Rio Cuale.
The Vallarta scenes are inspired from 1991 when Van Slyke and his wife Kay sailed through Banderas Bay on their way to the South Pacific in what turned out to be a 3-year circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean, culminating in a 38-day passage from Japan to Vancouver Island in their 41-foot sailboat.
The Van Slyke's were on their way to the South Pacific again in 2004, expecting to look for a "winter" home in New Zealand. But instead they were captured by what Van Slyke calls the "Vallarta Vortex." He explains: "We had visited Puerto Vallarta a couple of times before and always liked it. In our travels we had spent time in Cabo, La Paz, Mazatlan, Barra de Navidad and Zihuatenejo. But Vallarta always drew us back, like a whirlpool, and seemed to have the best of everything: best weather, best scenery, best services, best activities, best people. We love the rivers and mountains around Banderas Bay and never fail to be amazed at how green everything is when we come down for the beginning of the season every October. So, we cut our second Pacific cruise short, bought a condo at Marina Vallarta and couldn't be happier."
In his novel, novice sailors Mitch and Vivian Sanford's best friends are murdered aboard their sailboat in Puerto Vallarta. The evidence points to a pair of Mexican fishermen, but a missing journal convinces the couple that the fishermen are innocent. The real murderer is on another yacht, escaping to the remote Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia. The Sanford's have to decide if they are capable of sailing across the Pacific to bring their friends' killer to justice. The story shifts from Puerto Vallarta to the Pacific, concluding with a cliff-hanging ending in the Marquesas Islands, 2,800 miles southwest of Banderas Bay.
Sex, Lies & Spinnakers is available at bookstores and coffee shops around Banderas Bay. Mr. Van Slyke will be signing copies at the locations listed below during the last week of January and the first week of February. 10% of each sale will be donated to Ayuda a los Animales to support their mobile spay and neuter clinics.
