Banderas Bay Art Escapades Ohio Snaps - PVNN February 06, 2010
| From January 20-22, chalk artists from around the world drew amazing renditions directly on the street at The First Bucerías Chalk Art Walk. What was once just thought of as cement underfoot, now becomes a surface open to interpretation. A wall can become a window, surrealistically stretching it out into a thought provoking illusion or a masterpiece of perspective, borrowing at will from art movements around the world.
Transformed from colored earth into chalk, the artist affixes his ideas onto your psyche with his hand; a delicate medium with a soft history soon to be underfoot - or mixed with wind and rain to quickly become earth once again.
This practice of drawing Madonna's started on the steps of medieval churches was almost lost to the world wars but was revived in 1971 when an annual competition was begun in Mantua Italy.
Here in the Bay of Banderas we have been fortunate enough to host 5 of these events. The first one being the annual Sister Cities event in Vallarta's Municipal Plaza during the Guadalupe Festival and the latest on the streets of Bucerías, where Art Walk event organizers encouraged young and old alike to create their art alongside such renowned artists in the field as Tony Collantes, Lorelle Miller, Julio Jimenez and 5 time superstar participant, Lori Escalera, who astounded our senses with a 3D Mermaid.
Padre Christy blessed the beautiful works and many other community originations pitched in to make this one of the most spectacular events that Bucerias has ever had, that is until next year when history, talent, beauty, culture and chalk combine once again for the Bay's next big art escapade. |
