"Nora," "Northless" Lead Mexico's Ariel Nominations

Mexico City – Mariana Chenillo's "Five Days Without Nora," a dark comedy revolving around a Jewish funeral, garnered 11 of Mexico's Ariel nominations Thursday, and following close behind with 10 nominations was Rigoberto Perezcano's immigration-themed drama "Northless."
"Nora," "Northless" and Alberto Cortes' drama "Heart of Time" will vie for best picture at the 52nd Ariel Awards ceremony at Mexico City's Teatro Metropolitan on March 23. The Ariel is Mexico's equivalent of the Oscar.
Chenillo and Cortes also got nods for best director alongside Carlos Carrera, helmer of the thriller "Backyard."
Among the double-digit nominations for "Nora" and "Northless" are best original screenplay, first work, editing, and actor for Fernando Lujan ("Nora") and Harold Torres ("Northless").
Other features racking up nominations in multiple categories include "Backyard" with eight and "Heart of Time" with five.
Ariel finalists selected for best Ibero-American picture include "The Milk of Sorrow," "The Secret in Their Eyes" and "The Maid." The Peru-Spain co-production "Milk" and the Argentina-Spain collaboration "Secret" recently grabbed foreign-language Oscar nominations. "The Maid," a Golden Globe nominee and Sundance Jury Prize winner, is a Chile-Mexico co-production. |
