The Cool of Cabo in Mexico

Located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos provides visitors to Mexico an array of indulgent options. From abundant aquatic wonders to picturesque landscape, the traveler can explore much more than just its iconic arch.

Originally made famous by world-class marlin fishing, the now popular destination and cruise ship stop offers activities for all tourists to enjoy and stunning settings for that poolside margarita.

You arrive in Los Cabos International (SJD), and whether your trip consists of two days or two weeks, prepare to experience a unique taste of Mexico.

Unlike like other west coast Mexican sea resorts like Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco, most of Los Cabos centers off a single road (Highway 1) between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Appropriately, the majestic drive is painted with vibrant blue water on one side, and the Sierra Mountains on the other.

While you’ll never really need to leave the comforts of the resort, Los Cabos offers plenty of chances to be active. Whether you’re interested in charter fishing or sunset catamarans, parasailing or jet-skiing, the options are endless. Travelers visiting between January and March, should consider a more tranquil adventure - watching the Pacific Grey Whales.

Every winter, Grey Whales migrate from the Arctic Sea from as far away as Siberia and Alaska to birth their young in the warmer and more bountiful waters of the Sea of Cortez. Translation: you have a much better change of seeing the whales around this time. Watch from a boat or even from on land – either way, witnessing the mothers teach their calves is a breath-taking experience.

Coupling these adventures with Mexico’s vibrant nightlife and distinct cuisine creates an idyllic journey. If you’re truly enchanted, consider returning each winter, just like the whales.

Travel Tip: Bring binoculars. Seeing the whales is no guarantee, but whether up-close or from a distance, a pair of binoculars allows you to truly appreciate the details of these magnificent mammals of the deep.

Where to dine: Most resorts offer intercontinental or international cuisine for fine dining, but the recently opened to the public Hacienda Cocina y Catina prepares authentic Mexican. Located right on the swimmable stretch of Medano Beach, the elegant laid-back style provides the ideal setting for sunset cocktails and beachfront dining.

Hotels: Los Cabos hosts numerous award-winning resorts. The Pueblo Bonito Pacifica is just a few minutes outside of downtown Cabo San Lucas with access via shuttle bus to its more centrally located property. Another option is the more familiar SPG property, The Westin at Los Cabos, where a unique structural design highlights vivid desert colors.

Here are a few examples of cheap flights to Los Cabos:
Los Angeles flights from $274
Seattle flights from $358
Denver flights from $377
Miami flights from $400
