Out and About in Puerto Vallarta Twila Crawford - PVNN February 19, 2010
| Nacho Daddy, on the south side of Vallarta at Basilio Badillo #180, is a venue for different music groups Thursday-Saturday nights. | | Internationally-known author, conference speaker and theologian Joy Carol will speak February 23 from 10 am - 12 noon at the Community Church across from Hidalgo Park. She also will speak at services on February 28 at 8:30 am and 9:45 am. Joy Carol speaks about friendship, aging, spirituality and healing. She recently completed a speaking tour in India.
Carnival here last Saturday was colorful and loud with tutus, thongs, feathers, balloons, bells and whistles, fire, and heaven knows what else. It was a lot of fun.
Beautiful and tasty brunches with a view, now are served at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens south of town from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm on Sundays. On Valentine's Day, I had French toast stuffed with cream that went well with the sugar and the cinnamon on the bread. The Gardens are glorious and peaceful. Founder Bob Price has designed an incredible place. Gail Fuller, who has the beautiful gift shop, invited us for the visit. We received a bouquet of flowers from Bob Price.
Carol of Xocodiva Artisan Chocolates on Rodolfo Gomez is going to be a grandmother! She is excited, to say the least, about her daughter's pregnancy. Charlotte joins her partner in the excitement. Have a chocolate to celebrate their joy!
Musician and writer Tom Colvin has returned to Manila after visiting in Vallarta. He looks forward to performing on his harmonica throughout southeast Asia.
The annual tierra party at Cafe Bohemio, 127 Rodolfo Gomez, drew media persons Jim Hickey, national correspondent for ABC news radio, Marcia Sue Clever, M.D., documentary producer, and owner Sol Rose's friends, Ken and Marilyn Rocky. Marcia Sue Clever produced the documentary, "Children Underground," about street children in Bucharest, Romania. As I recall, it was nominated for an Oscar. The usual round of celebrities show up during high season. Ask Sol who has been in lately at the cafe.
The regular cast of characters at Cafe Bohemio besides Sol and Chris include chef Jose Manuel Rodriguez, cantinero (don't call him a bartender) Jose Castillon G., waiters and other staff. Always at the cafe is Victor Collins, a world-class bridge player. The former elementary school principal has played bridge since he was 17. He is a welcoming presence at Cafe Bohemio.
Southside's Nacho Daddy's lineup of musicians draws some outstanding guest performers. Co-owner Sean Moore's blues on Friday night get better and better. He sings all kinds of drinking, driving and crying songs. A guest guitarist, Tommy Proctor, Galveston Island, drew rave attention. Backing Sean are guitarist John Swanson, bass guitarist Steve York and drummer Luis Marilla. Plenty of dancers in the audience hit the floor. We enjoyed talking with Steve York's son, Jake, visiting from Wales.
The same night, we took in Paco, Miguel and Luis at Cuates y Cuetes on the beach. They are as good as ever with the guitars and congos and their beautiful voices.
