From the "Spiritual Conquest" to the Inquisition, from the Excommunication of "Heretics" and Revolutionary Priests to the Confiscation and Destruction of Church Property in the Mexican Reform, from the Anti clericalism and Socialist Education of the Mexican Revolution to the Catholic Campesino's "Cristero Rebellion" in the 1920s, we will cover the often stormy and never dull conflict between these two great rivals for the hearts, minds, and loyalties of the Mexican people.
We also will note the history of religious minorities in Mexico and the treatment they have received during different historical periods. Jewish migration to Mexico will be discussed, including the "Converso" phenomenon (forced conversions) during the Inquisition. Protestant arrival to Mexico will also be analyzed, as well as the recent growth of religious pluralism and secularism in Mexico.
