Tucson International Mariachi Conference Request for Sombreros Tina Roesler - project: brainstorm March 19, 2010
| Local musicians are encouraged to join in on the record attempt and registration is available on line via Tucsonmariachi.org or by calling 520-838-3908. | | Tucson, AZ - The Tucson International Mariachi Conference needs the community to lend them a hand, actually a hat.
A donation or loan of a sombrero to the conference for one night can make the pivotal difference in whether or not Tucson breaks the Guinness World Record for the most Mariachis performing simultaneously on one stage. If not for the sombrero concern Tucson is expected to easily break the existing record and poise itself to not be easily upstaged in future. With over 1,000 musicians convened for the conference and additional local performers encouraged to play, quantity of performers should not have been a problem.
However, according to Guinness' rules, performers without sombreros are not qualified. The conference is counting that there are enough former Mariachis and people who have purchased souvenir sombreros as keepsakes to fill in for those performers not in the position to buy one. Right now they estimate the shortage to be 200 sombreros - so every loaner will be appreciated.
The record attempt will take place on Thursday, April 22, at the Tucson Convention Center Arena,. The preregistered, formally dressed Mariachis will play 4 songs in unison, La Negra, El Triste, El Perico Loro y El Carretero to achieve the requisite performance time.
The show will begin at 6:00 as a precursor to the annual Participant Showcase. It is one of a series of events taking place the week of the conference included among the highlights are: Lila Downs Friday night performance at the Espectacular Concert and the next day's annual Fiesta de Garibaldi, Saturday all day in Reid Park.
Local musicians are encouraged to join in on the record attempt and registration is available on line via Tucsonmariachi.org or by calling 520-838-3908.
