Nelly Barquet was the organizer of this great event, with support from Puerto Vallarta Municipal Authorities, representatives of the Cultural Department and Tourist Office, and local restaurants.
For many years, our snow birds and full time residents have donated their time and money to the needy but have never been officially recognized by the city authorities - until now. On this occasion, Puerto Vallarta Mayor Salvador Gonzales Resendiz, US Consular Agent Kelly Trainor and Sra. Nelly Barquet thanked and presented awards to the foreign residents in our community who have worked so hard to provide help to the many charities in Vallarta.
Among those recognized for their altruistic works were: Jerry Lafferty for his work with Toys for Tots; Hubert and Polly Vicars for their unflagging support of the Becas Vallarta/America-Mexico Foundation; Los Mangos Library and Becas Vallarta founder the late Bernice Starr; Margaret Tolton, Stewart Leeb and Ron Walker for their work at Biblioteca Los Mangos; Buri Gray, who accepted an award on behalf of her late husband, Peter Gray, who founded the Art Museum at the CUC; Healthcare Resources Puerto Vallarta owner Pamela Thompson; Bob Mandel, the founder of the Puerto Vallarta Chapter of Make-a-Wish Mexico; Robin Bowchard for supporting Arturo y los Hijos de Dios; Bill Clark, Jerry Lafferty, Jeff Miltenberger and Warren Johnson of the Puerto Vallarta Navy League; US Consular Agent Kelly Trainor and CasaMagna Marriott Resort Puerto Vallarta General Manager Dennis Whitelaw for the Annual Altruism Festival; Susan Davalos and Mandy MacLeay for the International Friendship Club; Ivan Applegate for his work with Discapactados de Vallarta; PEACE founder Molly Fisher; Janice Chatterton for SPCA de PV; Jim McCarthy of the Eagle's Wings Foundation; and sculptor Jim Demetro for his Mexican Dancer sculpture, which graces the Malecón extension.
After the award ceremony and a nice speech in English by our new mayor, who suggested that each person be an ambassador of good will for Puerto Vallarta by helping to spread the word that Vallarta is a safe and peaceful place to visit, everyone was invited to Los Arcos Theater Amphitheater for a three part presentation by the The Xuitla Folkloric Ballet, featuring fantastic costumes and choreography from Jalisco, Chiapas and a fabulous finale of Bolero by Ravel.
Later, the crowd moved back to City Hall Plaza to enjoy a delicious buffet provided by some of the best restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, with music playing in the background. All in all, it was a wonderful night of friendship and goodwill for many of the outstanding foreign residents whose altruist work and service have made such a difference in the lives of so many in our community. |
