Loophole for Business Travelers to Canada Maria Gallucci - The News go to original May 11, 2010
The Canadian government has created a loophole for hundreds of Mexicans traveling to Canada on business, making it easier for professionals to obtain temporary travel visas on the fly.
Georges Boissé, the minister-counselor on immigration at the Canadian Embassy in Mexico, said the embassy had expedited around 300 business visas since the Business Express Program was implemented on April 1. Canada has issued between 55,000 and 60,000 temporary visas to Mexican tourists since the requirement was put into effect last July.
“It’s a program to facilitate the travel of business employees who are going to Canada for reasons related to their employment here in Mexico,” he told The News about the express service. “We’ve created a special process for (professionals) that simplifies their applications and makes sure that these are processed expeditiously.”
Boissé said that the embassy worked with its Trade Section earlier this year to identify 125 companies with offices in Mexico that send a substantial number of employees to Canada each year on business. Nearly 30 companies have already registered with the express program, he said, including Canadian technology company Research in Motion (RIM), which employs around 7,000 workers in Mexico to develop and market its BlackBerry smartphone devices. Other participants include airlines such as Mexicana and Air Canada. |
