This Sunday, June 6th, at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, there will be an Official Ground Breaking Ceremony for the new Orchid Conservatory. This will be the most important and impressive project in the five years that the gardens have been in existence. Dignitaries and some of Vallarta's most important residents will be in attendance.

The Orchid Conservatory is being built to house a collection of orchids native to Mexico. There are over 1,200 native Mexican orchids, and this will be the first collection of its kind in the entire country. This massive project is being funded by public donations.

Ground breaking will take place at 1 pm. Robert Price, curator of the gardens, will oversee the project and is expected to say a few words on the importance of preserving native species.

The Vallarta Botanical Gardens has a large collection of orchids and other plants. Also, there is a restaurant, a gift shop, a swimming hole in the river, a number of trails thru the jungle areas and shade houses where young plants get their start. In addition to plants and flowers, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens is a favorite place for bird and butterfly watchers. The gardens are open from 9 am to 6 pm. There is a small admission fee for those who are not members of the gardens.

For more information on the Botanical Gardens, visit their website at VallartaBotanicalGardensAC.org. The gardens are located 24 Km (about 16 miles) south of town, just 3 Km past Chico's Paradise. The bus to El Tuito will stop at the entrance to the Gardens, and will return you to town.

Located 30 minutes south of Old Town at Km. 24 on Highway 200, Vallarta Botanical Gardens offer something to keep every age group happy; from a Rose Garden for the romantic to jungle trails for the adventurous and a Carnivorous Plants area for the younger generation! The Botanical Gardens' vibrant and elegant settings also offer the perfect venue for weddings and special occasions.
