Where are the brightly colored leaves gently falling from the trees? Frost on the pumpkin? Hot apple cider? All of the images that we conjure up when we think of autumn?
Here in Puerto Vallarta, we don’t have falling leaves – we have a deep and very lush green of the jungle. No frost (or pumpkins) but we do have smooth skin from the humidity and baskets of mangos. Hot cider sounds terrible right about now but an agua fresca sure quenches the thirst!
It won’t be long before the weather will change, bringing balmy, tropical evenings and gorgeous blue daytime skies. October always seems to bring a special energy that you can feel in the air as folks return for the winter months, bringing with them the hope and anticipation of a good high season. We are ready!
I was lucky enough to take a few days off and head to the mountains to San Sebastian last week. After the first few hours there at the Hacienda Jalisco with my kids, I was beginning to think I had left my brain behind in Vallarta.
Try as I might, I could not think! As I sat and attempted to think of this project or that project that needed my planning and concentration, it wouldn’t work. I could only think of the moment that I was in. Carrying on a conversation with a 7 year old and a 4 year old was my biggest challenge – heaven!
Watching my son and seeing what he has accomplished with a 200 year old hacienda in the past three years without bursting with pride – heaven! Having the fog literally drop in late afternoon, so heavy and so quickly that you have to put on your sweatshirt to keep off the cold – heaven!
I learned the complete steps of the production of coffee, from picking the beans (or cherries as I was informed they are called), drying them, cleaning them (this is a family affair as we sit at the big table picking out the un-usable beans) and then watching Joey precisely run the roasting machine to bring the beans to the correct color and then bagging them up for sale – heaven!
After each batch, of course, he had to make a "sample" for us to try. This led me to having to de-tox upon returning to Vallarta six days later from the caffeine. It has been three years since Bud passed away but I can still feel his presence at the Hacienda Jalisco in many ways. I know he is as proud of Joey’s accomplishments as I am.
One important item that I am always reminded of after some time up on the mountain is that it is all about perspective. How we perceive things, people and priorities. And corny as it sounds, it really is about being in the moment.
So! Now that the attitude has been adjusted, it is time to pick things up a couple of notches and say "we are ready!"
