The crippled Carnival Splendor cruise carrying 4,500 passengers reached San Diego after being stranded for three days at sea.
It was early in the morning, when Karen Blocker, one of its passengers experienced the uneven movement of the cruise ship that caused her to run out of her room. She said that the corridor of the ship filled with smoke, the ship slowed down, then stopped. Then the public address system called the ship crew to the engine room.
It was later found out that the cause of the accident was that a fire blown up in the ship’s engine room making it immobilized for three days. The ship was about 150 miles southwest of San Diego and it carries 4,500 passengers and these people experienced frustration, having no hot food, air condition, no shower, no flush toilets, laundry services or any of the pleasure of a luxury cruise can give.
Mike Hall a 36-year old passenger said that they were on for a seven-day excursion with plans to stop in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo, San Lucas. They left the Long Beach Sunday night. Unfortunately, on Monday at 6 a.m., the Splendor lost its power and stopped.
The trip was awful, said the married couple, namely John and Ashley Vest who took time to save $1,500 fare to spend for their late honeymoon aboard the Splendor. Meanwhile, food and other provision shuttled at the crippled ship through Mexican tugboat Chihuahua and Navy helicopters on Tuesday. It was just a matter of time to hold and passengers come back real soon.
John Heald, the senior cruise director, on his blog about the damaged Splendor stated that he spend much of his time on the public address system, encouraging and calming the passengers, keeping their mood light in ways he know.
After three days at sea, Thursday morning, passengers disembarked 50 at a time and the Splendor was towed to San Diego. |
