A Page in the Sun Reopens in Puerto Vallarta

October 17, 2011

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Tuesday, October 18 will see the reopening of one of Puerto Vallarta’s iconic businesses in the Zona Romantica neighborhood. A Page in the Sun will reopen its doors after a 7 month period that left coffee lovers and book aficionados in a state of near desperation.

The espresso bar-café-bookstore, which has been a part of the Vallarta community since it first launched almost 2 decades ago, closed in February 2011 to find a new home. Friends and family of the owner-managers, Gaby Gomez and Lindsey Leyva, have been rooting for the sisters ever since amidst rumors of an eventual re-launch.

A Page in the Sun was launched when Puerto Vallarta was first making a name for itself as an international tourist resort in the 1990s and Olas Altas was a little known corner of the city. Since then, the business, like Puerto Vallarta itself, has grown dramatically.

The new premises, located at 179 Lazaro Cardenas (next to Hotel Eloisa across from Lazaro Cardenas Park, just 3 blocks north of the previous location,) affords high ceilings and lots of wall space to host what will become one of the largest English, Spanish and foreign language bookstores in the city. The café boasts an outdoor terrace that offers a quiet and comfortable place for people-watching and enjoying the sunset on the bay a half block away.

The sisters confirm they are consolidating the bakery and prep kitchen to expand their original menu concept and will be sampling new taster menus over the coming months. The owner-managers have a host of new ideas that they will be introducing over the high season, including book clubs, kid's reading groups and writers groups. They plan on hosting occasional art exhibits to support emerging artists and live guest musicians to consolidate the café’s reputation of a cultural community center within the south Vallarta area.

According to Gaby, "A Page in the Sun has always been about family, actual or chosen, and offered a sense of community, as well as a healthy menu while focusing on providing comfort and a welcoming place to relax. We are challenging ourselves to improve on our previous concept, and because we are no longer limited by size, we need to deliver the goods."

Lindsey added, "We’re excited about the new location, the amount of space we have to be creative and try new ideas. We were limited in our old location by its size. Being across from Lazaro Cardenas Park gives A Page in the Sun a more intimate and welcoming feeling than before, we have more space, more books and more ideas, so we’re very excited. The weekly cultural events held at the park give the café a different feel and energy."

The project has been 7 months in the making and has entailed a lot of hard work and research for the sisters. Along with great coffee, a healthy menu and secondhand books, the sisters also sell roasted coffee beans and ground coffee in half kilo and 1 kilo bags.

If you are new to a Page in the Sun, the sisters along with brother Alex, invite you to stop by, say hello and watch the world go by.

UPDATE: The official opening of A Page in the Sun has been postponed until November. But a soft launch will be held on Saturday, October 22nd from 7-9 pm. Lindsey and Gaby are inviting friends to drop by, enjoy a coffee or pastry while they browse the hundreds of books on offer or catch up with old friends.
