Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Unique art, handcrafted items, freshly baked goods, specialty foods, and a wide range of locally grown vegetables for the sampling... You can find all of this and more from 9:30 am to 2 pm every Saturday through the end of May at Vallarta's Old Town Farmers Market.
In keeping with the philosophy of "Make it, Bake it, Grow it," the Old Town Farmers Market- Tianguis Cultural is a "producer only" Market - all the products are made, baked, grown and sold by Vendors, all whom live within 50 kilometers of Puerto Vallarta.
Here's a sampling of what you'll find at the Old Town Farmers' Market this week...
Vera Bakery Café
If you are new to Vallarta you may not be familiar with Vera Bakery Café, known for its wonderful baked goods. Christian Calvento is from Argentina and began his career working as a pastry chef for Disney Cruise Lines and then for the Four Seasons Hotel before opening his shop in Bucerías with his partner Jorge. Available at the market are a variety of quiches such as Lorraine, spinach/onion, asparagus/blue cheese, mushroom/lentil and broccoli/ham (based on seasonal availability). They sell whole wheat, multi-grain and pumpernickel breads as well as delicious Empanadas. You can contact Christian or Jorge at verabakerycafe(at)gmail.com, by phone at (329) 298-1962 or visit their store at Lázaro Cárdenas #101 in Bucerías.
Café Yolanda Superior del Pacifico S.A. de C.V.
And what goes better with some pastry but a great cup of coffee? You can find Yolanda Madera and Tom Burris of Café Yolanda Superior del Pacifico S.A. de C.V. in the food court of the school. They have been selling coffee since 1996 that is made from locally, organically grown beans which they then roast. Besides by the cup, you can purchase their coffee in bulk, which they also sell to passengers off cruise ships to take home for friends and family to enjoy. They are proud to be supporting the local community by giving the independent growers a fair price for their crops. You can contact Yolanda or Tom at cafe_superior(at)hotmail.com, or by phone at (322) 222-6991.
Tellografia
One may wonder how some artists develop their unique style. For Pedro Tello of Tellografia he tells us it was accidental. Seven years ago he was experimenting with photography as well as conventional art techniques. After making a mistake by scratching photographic paper, he discovered a way to use scrapings to create art, even allowing different colors to develop. The result is quite unlike anything you have seen before. His style is as unique as the medium used by Pedro. In addition to the market, you can find Pedro displaying his work on Isla Rio Cuale under the bridge at Jardin del Arte or you can contact him via email at pedrotellografia(at)hotmail.com.
