Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus recently announced "Alegría!" a holiday performance to take place on Wednesday, December 19, at Teatro Vallarta.
Founded recently, the chorus presently features over 50 singers from Puerto Vallarta, the rest of Mexico and other countries, and will offer a varied repertoire with favorite Christmas and Hanukkah music in several languages.
"We are delighted to present our first grand performance at Teatro Vallarta," commented Artistic Director, Bob Bruneau. "We are currently holding auditions and inviting the local community to join our project. We wish to get as close to 100 performers onstage as possible by concert date."
Bruneau founded the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus just a few months ago with the mission to present beautiful, quality male choral music in English and Spanish, performed by the local and foreign gay community, and to use the power of this music to help build bridges of greater acceptance to the member’s families, the city of Puerto Vallarta, and Mexico.
The idea of sexual orientation-based choruses, while virtually unexplored in Mexico, has gone mainstream in many places around the world. GALA Choruses, a worldwide organization dedicated to facilitate the artistic development of its members, currently represent over 8,000 singers that belong to over 170 such choruses, worldwide.
Every four years, GALA Choruses organizes an important festival in which the majority of their members meet and perform. The last one took place July 7–11 in Denver Colorado, during which 45 vocal ensembles and 130 choruses offered 200 performances for the 6,000-plus attendees.
Puerto Vallarta was proudly represented during the festival; in a special ceremony, the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus was officially adopted into the membership, thus becoming the first gay men’s chorus in Mexico and all of Latin America.
Tickets for "Alegría!" will be available at Teatro Vallarta and Ticketmaster Mexico. Along with said performance, the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus has plans in the works to perform a free holiday concert at Los Arcos Amphitheater for the Puerto Vallarta community at large.
