There are reasons why certain foods are served for the new year. Dumplings are round and mean a circle of wealth, the lettuce rolls represent prosperity, fish is associated with abundance, and pork is thought to bring bounty and family unity.

This is the Year of the Snake and if you were born during any of these years, it is your symbol - 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001.

The snake is one of the twelve-year cycle of animals which appears in the Chinese zodiac and is the 6th sign. The Chinese New Year does not fall on a specific date, but always falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice.

There are many stories about the origin of this holiday but most revolve around a terrible mythical monster that preyed on villagers. The lion-like monster's name was Nian, which is also the Chinese word for "year." Most tales include a wise old man who counsels the villagers on how to ward off the evil monster by making loud noises with drums and firecrackers and hanging red paper cutouts and scrolls on their doors because Nian is scared of the color red. Daiquiri Dick's will have all the props to make this an authentic and festive party!

People born in the Year of the Snake are said to be thoughtful, wise, and approach problems rationally and logically. They sometimes sport big egos and can be conceited. However, they are often very active, not believing other people and relying only on themselves. If anyone has a sixth sense, it's those born in the Snake Year. Ancient Chinese wisdom says a snake in the house is a good omen because it means that your family will not starve.

Old Chinese Proverb: Happy people never count the hours as they pass. And the time will fly while you are having fun at Daiquiri Dick's.
