Organic Veggies & Artisans Soaps at the OTFM

March 8, 2013

Puerto Vallarta's Old Town Farmers Market-Tianguis Cultural is open from 9:30 am to 2 pm every Saturday from the first Saturday in November until the last Saturday of May.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - If visions of bountiful produce, just-baked treats, and hand-painted crafts dance in your head when you hear, "farmers' market," then you won't want to miss the "producer-only" goodies at the Old Town Farmers' Market.

Snap the peas; sample the hummus; listen to the rhythms of local musicians; and try on the fine Mexican apparel and accessories that have made this "make it, bake it, grow it" market a Saturday morning favorite.

While enjoying the community spirit of the Market, take time to chat with Brita Jankay and Anarda Duran, regional organic growers from Rancho La Semillita. They will be delighted to share their passion for growing fresh, organic produce. In fact, Brita and Anarda will help you complete your grocery list with their farm-to-table selection of organic lettuce mix, arugula, mustards, herbs, pickles, basil, radish, and baby carrots.

"When we arrived in San Pancho a year ago, we found the soil to be ideal for sowing our seeds," says Anarda, a veteran of the organic industry in San Miguel de Allende. "This is our first year participating in the Market, and we've met so many wonderful people. They appreciate the health benefits and exceptional flavor of our produce, and we're happy to be involved with the neighborhood."

OTFM contributes to the success of Banderas Soap Blends' new shop.

After you've filled your bag with fresh, organic veggies, head on over to Banderas SoapBlends. Their all natural artisan soaps, body and face creams, shower gels, and sea salt scrubs will delight you with invigorating aromas.

Banderas SoapBlends is the thriving business of two health care professionals: Patricia Light, a Canadian health care consultant and hospital administrator, and Ramon Ortega, an Internal Medicine doctor based in Puerto Vallarta. "Monday to Friday he is Dr. Ortega," says Patricia, "but on Saturday, he wears the Banderas SoapBlends apron and becomes Dr. Soap!"

"It really began as a hobby," explains Patricia. "After a fruitless search for handmade soaps in Puerto Vallarta, we decided to make our own. We started out in the kitchen of our home, making soap for ourselves and for friends. We sold some here and there, and thought, 'this is a viable business'."

In their first year, Banderas SoapBlends made 80 bars using all natural oils and botanicals found in Mexico. Just five years later, they have opened their retail store at 326 Basilio Badillo in Zona Romantica. "Without the Market it's hard to say if we would have the business we have today. We love the other vendors as they are a dedicated and hardworking group of people. Plus, we have lots of great memories of customers returning year after year to buy our products."

All Banderas SoapBlends bar soaps are made in small batches and cut by hand. Their body creams are made with an aromatic blend of oils. The sea salts scrubs are prepared with fine sea salts and body butters while the shower gels - made with an olive and coconut oil base - are free from detergents and sulfates. Every Banderas SoapBlends product contains essential oils that soften the skin and soothe the soul. Stock up with your own assortment of Banderas SoapBlends products from the Old Town Farmer's Market. For more information, visit them on Facebook.

This Saturday, discover the bounty of the Old Town Farmers' Market, located on Basilio Badillo and Pino Suárez on the South side of Puerto Vallarta. The Market is held every Saturday morning from 9:30 am to 2 pm from the first Saturday in November to the last Saturday in May.
