Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - Internationally famous sculptor Jim Demetro is currently working on his latest public sculpture, a life-size burro in bronze. The large statue, consisting of the burro, plus two small boys and a dog, will be donated to the City of Puerto Vallarta and should be ready for installation in Zona Romantica by early fall.
Last week, Demetro delivered the first of the smaller version of the statue. Part time Puerto Vallarta resident and author James Callan received the beautifully crafted work which is titled "Andale Bernardo." Bernardo is the name of the burro that served as the model for the sculpture. The artwork shows the stubborn burro being pushed by one Mexican boy and pulled by another boy. A dog gets into the act by pulling on the pant leg of one of the boys.
A local foundry is producing the bronze statues in both the full size and the smaller version. The life-size statue will be a gift to the people of Vallarta. The smaller versions are being sold to help fund the project.
Demetro has already donated the Vallarta Dancers, the most photographed sculpture on the Malecón. Another of Demetro's pieces is The Washer Woman, also a popular picture stop on the Malecón just outside Molino de Agua.
