Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - As 2013 draws to a close there are plenty of parties to attend here in Puerto Vallarta, but if you were thinking of showing up with beer, think again! From holiday get togethers to New Year's Eve blowouts, special occasions call for bubbly, and that's the end of the discussion.
Get ready for New Year's Eve by popping a bottle of champagne and drinking on the fancier side of life. We don't blame you. In fact, we'll introduce you to some of our favorite champagne cocktails - and we'll even share the recipes!
Obviously, if you have shelled out $800, $1500, or more, pesos for a fine bottle of French champagne, we're not going to recommend that you add a dash of fruit juice or liqueur. But if you've chosen one of the perfectly pleasant $100 to $150 peso sparkling wines that are readily available at this time of year, you might consider jazzing it up just a little.
Champagne cocktails are a fun way to put an even more celebratory twist on the traditional glass of bubbly. From a classic Champagne Cocktail to a Mexican Riviera, here are 8 sparkling cocktails that will add a little extra pop to your New Year's Eve celebration in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Champagne Cocktail: Place 1 sugar cube soaked with 3 drops Angostura bitters in a flute and add champagne. (Be careful - it will foam!)
The Blue Sky: Pour 1/4 ounce Grand Marnier in flute, add champagne, float 1/4 ounce Blue Curacao on top.
Barbotage: (New Year's Favorite) - Pour cognac (or another brandy) and Grand Marnier into a champagne flute, top up with brut champagne or a reasonable facsimile thereof.
Poinsettia Fizz: Pour 1 ounce cranberry juice and 1/2 ounce Grand Marnier in a flute, then top off with champagne.
Mexican Riviera: Pour 1 ounce tequila, 2 ounces sour mix and 2 tablespoons fresh raspberry puree in a flute. Top with 1-ounce float of champagne.
Cherry Sparkler: Put a maraschino cherry in the bottom of the flute. Pour in 1/2 ounce orange-flavored vodka and a dash of peach schnapps, then fill with champagne.
Blue Nirvana: Pour 1 ounce citrus-flavored vodka, 1 ounce Blue Curacao and a splash of sour mix in a flute, then fill with champagne. (If you don't have Blue Curacao, a splash of Grand Marnier works well, although without the color.)
Atomic Cocktail: Stir 1 1/2 ounces vodka, 1 1/2 ounces brandy, and 1 teaspoon of sherry well with cracked ice, then strain into a chilled glass and fill with champagne.
These are just a few suggestions. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Once the bubbly is flowing and the party is in full swing, it doesn't matter if you are a professional mixologist. The only thing that you will be penalized for is if you hop behind a steering wheel when the festivities are over and done with.
