NBA Game in Mexico City Cancelled Due To Fire

December 5, 2013

Because of smoke from a generator malfunction, the Mexico City arena was forced to be evacuated and the NBA game canceled. The picture shows the smoke filled arena during the pre-game tv broadcast.

Mexico City, Mexico - The Timberwolves and Spurs were supposed to play a game in Mexico City on Wednesday, but instead all both teams apparently did was take a little early season trip south of the border for no reason.

Because of a malfunction with a generator, the arena was forced to be evacuated as smoke filled the lower bowl. The picture above shows the arena clouded with smoke during the pre-game television broadcast.

After some confusion and some delays, it was announced the game was postponed with no makeup date set. The Wolves were set to be the home team, so the game will be rescheduled at some point in Minneapolis.

The league released this statement:

"The National Basketball Association game scheduled for tonight between the San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves was postponed due to a generator malfunction which produced smoke inside Mexico City Arena. The date for the rescheduled game, which will be played at Target Center in Minneapolis, will be announced at a later time."

Local police released this statement:

"What happened was provoked by a short circuit in the room of generators," the statement said in Spanish.
