Reynosa, Mexico – A rare and unusual cross-breed made its debut at a zoo in Reynosa, Mexico last week.
It's a zonkey, a cross between a zebra and a donkey. The bizarre animal, named Khumba, was born on April 21st and apparently there was a some romance involved.
His mother is a zebra called Rayas, while his father is Ignacio, a dwarf albino donkey who lives on a nearby farm. According to the zoo, Rayas used to visit Ignacio every afternoon and the donkey would also cross into the zoo to see her.
Eventually, Rayas became pregnant.
The zoo says the specimen is extremely rare because zebra and donkey chromosomes were not thought to be compatible.
Although exceedingly rare, Khumba is not the first zonkey. A zonkey was spawned last year at a zoo in Italy when a male zebra jumped over a fence into an enclosure housing donkeys. The resulting offspring was named Ippo and he became a huge sensation at the Florence Zoo.
The mix breeds are also in the United States, China, and Japan.
Reynosa is a border city in the northern part of Tamaulipas, located directly across the border from Hidalgo, Texas. It is largest city in the state of Tamaulipas.
