'Kids in Museums' Program at Peter Gray Art Museum

go to original
June 6, 2014

The 'Kids in Museums' program was inspired by the vision of Mr. Peter Gray, who believed in the importance of bringing art and culture to underprivileged school children in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Once a month a group of children attending public elementary schools participate in the "Kids in Museums" Program at the Peter Gray Art Museum on the Centro Universitario de la Costa de la Universidad de Guadalajara's Puerto Vallarta campus.

The program was created by the museum board in 2011, inspired by the vision of Mr. Peter Gray, who believed in the importance of bringing the culture of art to underprivileged kids.

Board members and artists residing in the city of Puerto Vallarta teach a painting workshop for the children, who are given the necessary materials to make their art works. Ada Colorina, Meg Munro, and Bill Magrail presented the activities held on Tuesday, May 27, and the President of the Board, Buri Gray, supervised the activities.

Following the workshop, the children enjoyed a delicious and nutritious breakfast and then went on a tour of the university's "Reptile Cipactli," where they observed the different species that live there under the care of professionals.

Since the beginning, they have invited groups of 4th grade students from Puerto Vallarta's 20 de Noviembre and Palo Alto elementary schools; and in 2013 they incorporated public elementary school students from the Delegation of Ixtapa. All of the groups are provided transportation by the museum's board of trustees.

The support of the Centro Universitario de la Costa and the patronage of the Peter Gray Art Museum have made it possible to provide an artistic experience to underprivileged children. With your help, they can continue to invite children to be part of this program, which expands the arts curriculum of local schools.

For further information, or to volunteer your time and/or resources to this worthwhile project, please contact Buri Gray at (322) 221-5285.
