I usually write to tell you pet lovers about a new pet-friendly hotel. This time I’m letting you know about the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, which just became non-pet friendly.
It was only last month that I received a press release touting a pawsome pet package for pampered pooches at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, an all-inclusive hotel near Puerto Vallarta and where I stayed a couple of years ago and liked. But due to pawpoplar demand, the package has been canceled.
"It turns out that Velas has gotten such a large number of inquiries about pet visits since the announcement that management felt that they could not handle all the pets operationally and still maintain luxury standards, so the program was discontinued," a Miami-based hotel publicist wrote to me in an email last week.
Because I wanted to be clear before I delivered this shocking news to you, I wrote back to ask if that meant the package was discontinued or if the property no longer welcomes dogs at all. No response. I called the hotel reservations number and was told, "I'm sorry ma'am but there aren't going to be any more dogs at the resort."
In case you were wondering what Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit offered pooches before the inquiries became too overwhelming and dogs banned, pups were to receive a comfy bed, bowls and special welcome surprise. You and your furry friend could have played fetch with a ball with the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit logo on the resort’s powder-white sand beach. Dogs 25 lbs. and under were welcome, starting at $75 per night.
And Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit had partnered with Boston-based pet groomers, The Dogfather, to offer a specialized Cosmetic Package including an oatmeal bath, hair brush, ear and teeth cleaning, and nail trimming for an additional $195, all performed on-site at the resort. And there were options that included amenities like fresh organic food and bottled water with Bach flowers, as well as the services of a pet sitter who could have taken your pup for strolls on the beach.
I guess it’s true that all good things must come to an end. A pity because taking a dog to Mexico from the United States is so easy, making the Riviera Nayarit the ideal international getaway with your pampered pooch. If you’re headed that way, keep in mind that in Punta Mita, about 26 miles from Puerto Vallarta International Airport, both the Four Seasons Punta Mita and the The St. Regis Punta Mita accept pets. I don’t imagine either one of those hotels will change its policy.
