Theater is Alive and Well in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

September 9, 2014

With a myriad of Spanish language theater groups, along with performances in English showcased at various performing arts venues, theater is alive and well in Puerto Vallarta, and it is here to stay.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Visibly rich and flourishing, the theater scene in Puerto Vallarta can no longer be overlooked. Spanish language theater groups like Dionisio, Via Boagem, Grupo Municipal de Teatro de Puerto Vallarta, Perro Bravo, along with English language performances showcased at various venues like The Palm, Stages, and the Boutique Theatre, have made it such that the variety, availability and quality of theater productions here in town attract more and more people to see a play.

With the movie houses providing the public with limited choices, and most of the time duplicating movies in over thirty movie halls, it comes as no surprise that the Puerto Vallarta public has shifted their attention to live performance venues for a true and unexpected artistic experience.

Artisans who hone their craft over a period of three months to showcase their work on stage for a period of only two or three weeks, have achieved extraordinary results in changing the public's mind about entertainment, and gearing them toward the theater to see a play. Theater is alive and well in Puerto Vallarta, and it is here to stay.

Lately most of these theater groups have participated in, been nominated for, and won many prizes at, various city, state and national festivals. In doing so, not only have they shown there is a growing desire for theater here, they have also proven that in showing quality theater they promoted wellbeing in Puerto Vallarta, and helped promote the city as an emblem of art and culture.

Theater groups in Puerto Vallarta are now unavoidable and natural players in promoting this town as a tourist destination. They have made Puerto Vallarta an obvious focal point for the different theater festivals around Mexico, putting the city on the map as a required stop for theater aficionados around the state and country.

In just a short period of time Vallartenses have quickly been awakened to the theatrical form of art, and are now asking for more. Last season's hit Princesas Desesperadas is a good example of the enthusiasm generated amongst the people in our town. Over a thousand people saw it, and, together with different media outlets, are asking for an encore performance.

This is a great thing for Vallarta, and a clear shift in the mind of the people here. People want more theater, and they are asking for it. For local folks it means great things, and for just a few more pesos than a movie they know they will enjoy a form of entertainment that can't be replicated anywhere else.

Theater has transformed the lives of individuals for thousands of years, and it's still going strong everywhere. Vallarta is versatile, generous and outstanding in its theatrical offerings, and has quite a lot in store for the continuing season.

One such example is Princesas Desesperadas, which makes it way to The Main Stage at ACT II Entertainment for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Saturday, September 27th. This is the first project under the supervision of Perro Bravo, the production company that was created in early 2014 by Cesar Daniel Bravo Ramirez and Alain Perreault.

Under the clever direction of Ramiro Daniel, the Spanish adapted version of Princesas Desesperadas (by Mexican playwright Tomas Ustusastegui,) is a comedy that brings together four classic Disney Princesses fifteen years after their "happily ever after." None of them are happy that they are not yet queens, and what ensues is a farcical merry-go-round that makes the phrase "All Hell Broke Loose" sound harmless and childish. The desperate princesses will have it out, and it's not going to be pretty. Nobody does a bitch fight better!

Don't miss your chance to see Princesas Desesperadas on Saturday, September 27th, 8:30 pm on the Main Stage at Act II Entertainment, Basilio Badillo #300 (corner of Insurgentes), above Wings Army. Tickets $100 pesos. For more information & reservations, call (044) 322-294-3026, and 322-222-1512.
