Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - As one of the most prestigious national and international sportfishing tournaments on the West Coast, the Torneo Internacional Puerto Vallarta de Pez Vela y Marlin has upheld a powerful presence among sport fishing tournaments for almost 60 years.
The rich fishing grounds of Banderas Bay and the Mexican Pacific, home to Sailfish, Blue and Black Marlin, Dorado and Giant Yellowfin Tuna, have made Puerto Vallarta a household word among big-game anglers - and THE place to go in Mexico for serious bill fishing.
Sponsored by the Puerto Vallarta Fishing Club, the Puerto Vallarta International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament has always offered fishermen 3 exciting days of competitive fishing in some of Mexico's finest waters, along with valuable prizes and a spirit of friendly competition.
In 2014, the International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament celebrates its 59th year. Scheduled to take place in Puerto Vallarta from November 12th-15th, this popular annual event promises to be even bigger and better than ever - with thousands of dollars in cash and prizes to be awarded.
Year after year, this tournament has seen an increase in the number of participants from various countries and states within Mexico. This year, competitors from Mexican cities Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Monterey, Tampico and Léon, the United States and Canada are expected to participate.
The objective of this tournament is to promote sport fishing and the organization of tournaments and sportsmanship, while creating a sense of preservation for the abundant species that reside in the warm blue waters of Puerto Vallarta.
Last year, some changes were made to reflect these objectives. In an effort to protect wildlife and help preserve fish species, only marlin of over 220 lbs, sailfish of more than 77 lbs, tuna over 66 lbs, and mahi-mahi over 22 lbs will qualify. Marlin and Sailfish teams may also participate in the mode of catch and release.
