Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Last May's Pulpito Drag Derby raised $25,000 pesos for new planters, street lights, benches and trash containers at the intersection of Pulpito and Olas Altas, as part of the Pulpito Plaza Project at the foot of the Pinnacle stairs.
The first annual Drag Derby featured a dozen faaabulously costumed contestants racing up and down the Pinnacle stairs, and in and out of Pulpito bars and restaurants, performing required stunts to the delight of the crowd cheering them on and placing bets.
The Derby was such a hit with locals and tourists alike that the Amapas Junta Vecinal is staging a rematch on Thursday, May 21.
This year's event will kick off Vallarta Pride, and blend seamlessly into its Opening Party, whose epicenter will be the former Paradise Community Center, spilling out onto Pulpito Street with a DJ and special entertainment throughout the evening - an Amapas block-party on steroids.
The Derby needs dozens of volunteers to help with organizing and publicity, placing bets, selling t-shirts, keeping track of the contestants - who can be a real handful - and helping out behind the scenes.
A big event, lots of fun, and all for a good cause. If you'd like to volunteer, email the Amapas Neighborhood Association at info(at)amapaspv.com.
