2016 NFL Regular Season Games: Mexico or Germany?

go to original
September 25, 2015

Dolphins celebrate win against Raiders in London last year. Waller said the amount of games played in London in 2016 will be determined when the league decides if it expands elsewhere internationally.

Palm Beach, Florida - While the NFL ponders eventually placing a franchise a London, the league will decide in the next 6-8 weeks whether to hold regular season international games in 2016 outside of the United Kingdom.

Mark Waller, the NFL executive vice president of international, said on Thursday that the league is considering hosting more international games next year, with Mexico and Germany as possibilities.

Arizona and San Francisco played a regular season game in Mexico City in 2005 in front of a record 103,467 fans.

Germany had decent fan support in the NFL Europe days.

"We've always been clear that we had a great experience in 2005 in Mexico," Waller said. "And we have a great fan base down there so that's definitely a possibility. There's high interest from Germany where we have a great fan base leftover from the World League and Europe League, so there's at least a couple of options for us. And they are very good options as well."

This year the league will host three London games, beginning on October 4 with the Dolphins and the Jets. Waller said the amount of games played in London in 2016 will be determined when the league decides if it expands elsewhere internationally.

The NFL is still studying the possibility of eventually placing a franchise in London.

There are other options including holding eight regular season games a season in London. That could mean having "several teams completing a full schedule."

Last year the NFL experimented with a 2:30 pm kickoff in London which was 9:30 a.m. on the United States' east coast and 6:30 am on the west coast.

This year all three London games will air at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Waller said the ratings grew throughout the broadcast last year until it reached in the high 8.0s. He acknowledged that 6:30 am kickoffs on the west coast aren't ideal, but it's given the league a new audience internationally.

Those games kickoff at 9:30 pm in China and Waller said the ratings doubled in Asia last year for the early London start.

The earlier kickoff also allows fans in the U.K. — many of whom travel 2+ hours for the game — to get home on Sunday night.

"Last year we got a lot positive feedback from the US," Waller said. "Fans said how good it was to be able to wake up in the morning and watch a game and actually watch a game that was very different as it was coming from the UK. US fans in the past have not necessarily seen many benefits from games being played in the UK"

Next week's Dolphins-Jets game will be the first division game played in London. The Dolphins, who have a sizable fan base in London, gave up their home game but will still face the Jets in New York on Week 12.

"We have the first divisional rivalry that's being played in the U.K. so that's going to add a new dimension both to the participating teams and obviously for our fans," Waller said.

Waller said the London games are selling out even though the Rugby World Cup is being played in London at the same time.

"That's a great testament to our fandom that we'll be sold out after all three games including those games that run opposite big World Cup games," he said.

In July the NFL and Tootenham Hotspur reached a 10-year deal that guarantees the NFL will play at least two games a year at the new stadium in London, which is scheduled to open in 2018.

The Dolphins will return to Wembley Stadium this year after defeating Oakland there 38-14 last season. The Dolphins were the road team in 2014.

The London games this year will be broadcast live for the first time on BBC, London's premier network. The BBC will also air a weekly NFL highlight show.
