Detroit, Michigan - Detroit has a new international airline. Sort of.
Icelandair will start flying from Detroit Metro Airport on December 27, 2015 - but not to Iceland. Instead, it will head south.
The airline has been hired to fly charters for Apple Vacations, which sells all-inclusive winter package vacations that include nonstop air from Detroit to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. So if you book an Apple vacation from Detroit to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta or Punta Cana on certain dates, your charter flight will be on an Icelandair plane.
Icelandair has never before flown to or from Detroit Metro Airport.
An Apple schedule shows details of the service, which runs roughly from Dec. 27 to April 4. You can book the flights alone or as part of an Apple package.
Nonstop service from Detroit to Cancun will be Sundays, Thursdays and Fridays. Nonstop Detroit to Puerto Vallarta will be Mondays. Nonstop Detroit to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, will be Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Apple Vacations began using Icelandair last year on its charter flights from Boston to Mexico and the Caribbean.
