La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Mexico - The summer solstice has been celebrated for centuries, with all sorts of traditions growing up around the event. In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice is usually celebrated on the 21st of June, but this year in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, it will be celebrated on Saturday, June 24 with a fun Umbrella Downwinder Regatta and SUP Rally through Marina Riviera Nayarit.

To participate in the Umbrella Downwind Regatta, meet at the Marina's Poolside Deli at 2:00 pm to sign up (free) for the umbrella race, which starts at 3:00 pm. All entrants must register to be eligible to win cool prizes from local business in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

Umbrella Downwinder Regatta

Umbrellas, Kayak, Paddle or Surf boards, dinghy... anything that floats and is under 14'. You can design your own rig to capture wind, if not using an umbrella, but it cannot be a conventional rig.

Rules: Maximum 2 regular size umbrellas OR 1 large umbrella per person. No engines/motors. Paddle or oars for a rudder system to navigate. Only one paddle or oar, no paddling or sculling. No keel-line or leeway appendages allowed. Be creative when designing your vessel, and earn extra points for Pets on Board. Open to all ages.

SUP Rally Games

Registration for the SUP Rally will be at 4:00 pm at Oso's Fish Market Restaurant. The race will take off from Oso's small beach at 4:30 pm. At 5:00 pm you can registration for the ultimate SUP Rally, which starts at 5:30 pm with two teams racing through the marina on custom 8 person boards.

Rules: Paddle boards only. Surf Mexico (Pacific Paddle) will provide demo boards and bring two custom 8 person boards to create the ultimate Stand Up Paddle Board Rally. Bring your SUP, demo boards will be limited. Open to all ages.

After the races, (at around 6:00 pm), you can kick back and enjoy great food, drinks and live music at Oso's Oyster Bar, where fabulous prizes sponsored by local businesses in La Cruz will be awarded to the winners in each category.

Even if you are not participating, everyone is welcome to come out to cheer on the contestants and enjoy a fun-filled day, along with great food and music at Oso's Fish Market Restaurant.
