Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - I really didn't know what I was in for when I saw Hedda Lettuce (a.k.a. Steven Polito) this past Friday night. I knew that she had been selling out most of her shows all season, so I was excited to finally get a chance to see her perform. There was only one empty seat left at the 9:30 pm, Friday show, at a time when many shows around town aren't full.
Back for a 3rd season at Act II's The Red Room, Hedda Lettuce has a reputation of being outrageously funny and her show turned out to be a rollercoaster ride of laughs and crazy surprises! Hedda delivered some great spoofy songs, with altered lyrics that cracked us up. What a great voice!
Most of the show was streaming improv comedy that played off the audience. To pull off a show like this, the entertainer has to be incredibly sharp. Hedda kept it coming all night long and, from the looks on people's faces, there wasn't a disappointed person in the audience.
Six-time Drag Queen of the Year Award-winner, this dazzling, legendary "Green Goddess" of drag entertained us with wild stories, witty comebacks, audience banter and some pretty fine singing. Hedda Lettuce proved why she is one of New York City's premiere drag queens and a Vallarta favorite.
Hedda has appeared on HBO, Comedy Central and MTV. She's also been featured in films, commercials and in off-Broadway projects. She's performed with stars like, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyra Banks, Vanessa Williams and Madonna and appeared on such television shows as Project Runway and Sex and the City. Michael Musto, American Journalist and writer for OUT.com, has crowned Hedda, "The undisputed grand dame of the drag comedy set."
Hedda opened the show on Friday with her signature song, "The Queen of Green." In the lyrics, she admits that 'she's easy and she's sleazy,' but what we learned is how incredibly lovable, funny and endearing, Hedda Lettuce really is! She's adopted into her character, a parody of elite, snobbish NYC ladies, which only adds to her adorable 'diva' persona.
Hedda had us rolling on the floor as she belted out the tune, "Jesus Take the Wheel Because I'm Too Drunk to Drive." You have to see the show to get the full comedy effect! After a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause, she treated us to an encore, serenading us with "I Got A Kick Out of You."
You can see Hedda Lettuce in The Red Room on Thursday and Friday nights at 9:30 pm through June 1. She's also bringing her iconic NYC Movie Nights to Act II Entertainment Stages. The first movie, Singin' in the Rain, will be screened on April 17th at 7:30 pm and Hairspray will be featured on May 20th. You'll enjoy Hedda's zany commentaries and outrageous remarks before and after the films. Learn more at actiientertainment.com.
