Success Without Limits a profile of Sergio Bustamante
After many years of admiring and purchasing some of the works of Sergio Bustamante, Guillermo Bonilla Ruiz and I had the pleasure of meeting him in Puerto Vallarta this past weekend and found out a little about his past, present and future.
Sergio Bustamante was born in Sinaloa, grew up in Jalisco and currently lives in Guadalajara. He also owns a home in Puerto Vallarta but only gets a chance to stay here a few days a month because of his busy schedule.
Sergio has always been interested in design and water colors ever since he began studying architecture at the University of Guadalajara where he received his degree and then went into crafts, painting, and sculpturing. Sergio started making paper maché in Tonala and invented a technique requiring various stages that everyone uses nowadays. He opened his first store in Tlaquepaque where he made immense brass figures. Several years later he started working with bronze and made small animal figures and at the same time started designing his very original jewelry line.
Sergio opened his first of three stores in Puerto Vallarta about 15 years ago and has 7 more stores throughout Mexico including his main store in Tlaquepaque, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico City, and Cancun. He also has two stores in Europe with another opening soon in Zurich as well as several in the United States including Boston, Chicago, Florida and Washington.
Sergio's latest venture is painting, but it's not meant to be sold. So far he's painted merely for pleasure, although there's far more commitment in painting. It makes you suffer, but it also gives you pleasure.
Future plans are to continue designing his lovely jewelry, paper maché, ceramics and bronzes and he hopes to have another exhibition of his works throughout Mexico toward the end of the year.
