Mexico's Fernandez to Race NASCAR Event in Homeland TSN.ca
Adrian Fernandez will drive in the inaugural NASCAR Busch Series race in Mexico City next month.
Fernandez will drive a Lowe's sponsored Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports on March 6.
"I am honoured by this opportunity to be part of Lowe's, Hendrick Motorsports and NASCAR," said Fernandez, who was forced to put his IRL career on hold this year due to sponsorship issues.
Ironically, March 6 is the season opening race for the IRL in Miami.
"I know race fans in Mexico are excited about the race. I have watched NASCAR races on television all of my life and now I get the opportunity to see what it is all about."
Fernandez will not be the only Mexican driver in the race. Former Champ Car driver Michel Jourdain Jr. is competing full time in the Busch Series this year with ppc Racing.
Although this race will be Fernandez's first stock car outing, his comparatively recent road course experience might prove an advantage. He raced in the Champ Car World Series until the end of 2003 and already knows the Mexico City track, unlike the Busch regulars who last went road course racing at Watkins Glen in 2001.
Fernandez, who plans to test a stock car in the next few days, is not expected to compete in any other NASCAR-sanctioned events this year. |
