Bus Driver Strike Avoided
email this pageprint this pageemail usPVNN

Busses kept running on promises of higher fares.

Puerto Vallarta - Last Thursday afternoon, the leader of the Unión de Permisionarios [bus driver's union], José de Jesús Bernal, announced the possibility of a strike if they could not come to an agreement with the State Transportation authorities to increase bus fares.

At 11:30 pm that same night, state authorities, bus drivers, and the secretary of the Office of Highway Administration arrived at an agreement to not suspend bus service - but instead to raise the cost of bus fares to 5 pesos beginning on March 19th.

According to Ignacio Moreno Hernández, the Regional Sub-Commander of the Secretary of Highway Administration and Traffic Office in Puerto Vallarta, an emergency back-up plan had been discussed with Jaime Ruvalcaba, head of SISTECOZOME, to implement 132 vehicles to provide the people of Puerto Vallarta with public transportation in case of a strike.

Ruvalcaba said that it was his responsibility to verify that service was being given and to inform Guadalajara of any setbacks. He traveled along the main streets and intersections of the city, and since bus traffic and routes appeared to be operating normally, concluded that there is no need to utilize the back-up plan.

So, at least for now, everything is normal in the Public Transportation System, at least for this tourist destination, with all bus lines continuing to provide the people of Puerto Vallarta with transportation, and the students and workers having to find a way to pay the higher fares.
