Get Ready for the 12th International Sports Classic

| Coming up on May 20th is the popular and always growing 12th Annual Sidral Aga Sports Classic.

Puerto Vallarta - Every May, just when it seems the high season is winding down, hot and heavy sporting events fire up competitive spirits at the Puerto Vallarta International Sports Classic. Offering a weekend full of fun for all ages, this year's Sports Classic will take place from May 20-22. Based at the Bougainvilleas Sheraton Resort and Convention Center in Puerto Vallarta, events will be held at the sports stadium, local beaches, and resort tennis clubs.
Every year since 1993, when the Sports Classic became an annual tradition, teams from all over North and South America, including national and professional athletes, come to Vallarta to compete in a variety of sporting events, along with Banderas Bay area athletes and school children. This year, more than 2,000 athletes are expected to participate.
The brainchild of former Olympic basketball champion, Howard Kelsey, the International Sports Classic is a popular Puerto Vallarta sporting event with competitions and exhibition games that range from basketball, softball and children's soccer tournaments, a 5k fun run, and an aerobics marathon to tennis and Pro-Beach Volleyball tournaments.
The final and marquee event of the Vallarta Sports Classic will be the basketball championship held at the gym at the sports stadium. Over the last three years, the final game of the tournament has pitted a Mexican team against an all-star team of former Olympic and professional athletes from the U.S. and Canada - including the ever popular Jerome Kersey, a long-time veteran of the NBA and holder of a world championship ring, who will also be heavily involved in public relations at this year's International Sports Classic.
Competitions and activities are open to sports teams and individual athletes of all ages and skill levels - from professional to recreational. You can bring your own team or be added to one by the organizers, who will place you according to competence.
The competitions to be held are:
Basketball Tournament - twelve teams with the participation of active and retired NBA players and top local teams. This year for the second time, there will be a children category (12 -13 years) with teams from Portland, Oregon, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
Atletica Soccer Tournamet - with 80 teams in the junior category.
Softball Tournament - with three mixed teams from the United States and Canadian embassies and the “Puerto Vallarta City Hall Stars”
Cristaleria del Pacifico/Posada Rio Cuale Tennis Tournament - with over 100 participants in various categories.
Pureza Aga 5K Run - with approximately 300 participants.
Frisbee Exhibition - with over 100 participants.
Aerobic Marathon - with more than 100 participants, at the amphitheater on May 22; sponsored by Tools for Success.
The most important participation is that of the people of Vallarta, everyone is invited to this traditional sports event. Admission to the events is free to all. |
