The initiatives make jail terms longer for sexual tourists and domestic abusers.
Mexico City - The Chamber of Deputies this week passed legislation increasing prison sentences for those convicted of involvement in child pornography, pimping and sexual tourism, while the Senate approved a measure designed to better protect women and girls from domestic violence and other forms of abuse.

The lower house passed amendments to several laws that, among other things, provide for sentences of up to 16 years in prison for the sex-related crimes.

"With the bill's passage, we take a momentous step toward meeting the international commitments Mexico made when it signed and ratified various instruments designed to eradicate the sexual or commercial exploitation of children," said Adriana González Furlong, chairman of the congressional committee on vulnerable groups.

As representatives were passing measures to curtail child sexual exploitation, senators were endorsing a bill designed to prevent and combat violence against women and girls.
