America Wins Mexican Title AP
| Aaron Padilla was named the tournament's most valuable player following Sunday's game. | Aaron Padilla and Claudio Lopez scored two goals each as Mexico City's America won its 10th Mexican league title with a 6-3 win over the Tecos of Guadalajara.
The two teams drew 1-1 on Thursday in the first leg of the two-game final.
The victory before a crowd of 105,000 in America's Azteca Stadium was the club's first title since 2002 and equaled CD Guadalajara, or Chivas, for the most in Mexican history. Chivas however has finished runner-up nine times while America has finished second six times.
Padilla and Lopez, selected as the tournament's most valuable player after Sunday's game, put America ahead with a goal each in the first four minutes, an advantage it never relinquished.
Padilla scored in the second and 37th minutes, while Lopez netted in the fourth and 89th minutes. Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Jesus Mendoza sealed the victory with goals in the 62nd and 78th minutes.
Eduardo Lillingston, Carlos Morales and Flavio Davino scored for the Tecos in the 22nd, 59th, and 86th minutes.
Ecstatic America fans waved large flags with the team's blue and yellow colors as they took post-game victory laps around Mexico's Angel of Independence monument, heavily guarded by police. |
