Gov't Says It Won't Attack Zapatistas Wire services
The government said Friday it will not attack the Zapatista rebels, who recently declared a "red alert" and withdrew from public view to discuss the future of their movement.
President Vicente Fox's spokesman, Rubén Aguilar welcomed suggestions made in a rebel communiqué this week that the group may be considering a broader movement toward mainstream politics.
Asked at a news conference if he could assure that the army would not attack Zapatista areas, Aguilar said, "Armed action is not a solution," he said.
PGR Launches Hotline For Journalists
The Attorney General's Office (PGR) set up a hotline Friday for journalists who have received threats or been attacked.
Federal agents will staff the toll-free hotline, taking down information on possible cases and handing them over to the proper authorities, the PGR said in a statement.
Facing increasing attacks against journalists, President Vicente Fox has already named a special prosecutor for crimes against journalists.
On Tuesday, Paris-based Reporters Without Borders said at least 16 Mexican journalists have been killed or vanished since 2000. |
