Mexican Newspaper Editor gets Daniel Pearl Journalism Award in LA Associated Press
| In Tijuana, the name of Jesús Blancornelas has become an icon in journalism and, above all, in narcoculture. If you ask almost anybody who is Jesús Blancornelas, he or she will tell you: “Oh, Mr. Blancornelas writes about the narcos. He writes about the truth. His newspaper is the best paper in Tijuana. He writes for the people...” | The co-founder and editor of a Tijuana-based newspaper has received Southern California's top journalism honor.
Sixty-eight-year-old Jesus Blancornela was honored for his work in the weekly Zeta, which has investigated government corruption and drug cartels, and whose editors have repeatedly been the targets of assassination attempts.
He was awarded the Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity at the Los Angeles Press Club's 47th annual ceremony at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel last night.
Blancornelas, who has been called the godfather of modern Mexican journalism, travels around Tijuana under heavy guard but continues to write weekly columns. His syndicated articles appear in newspapers throughout Mexico. |
