(Photo: AP) | A British citizen suspected of links to terrorists behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center has been detained in the southern end of the Baja California peninsula, Mexican authorities reported late yesterday.
The suspect was identified as Amer Haykel, born in Beirut, Lebanon. He is wanted by U.S. authorities, the Mexican Attorney General's Office said in a statement released from Mexico City. Haykel "according to U.S. authorities is linked to extremist groups presumably involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York," the statement read.
He was detained by Mexican federal agents inside the Fire Station at Todos Santos, a town on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur known for its artists colony.
The detention was coordinated by the Attorney General's Office, and the Center for Investigation and National Security, according to the statement. The arrest was "the result of investigation and intelligence operations, as well as exchange of information with the U.S. government," the statement said.
The suspect was turned over to Mexico's National Institute for Migration, and transported to Mexico City, the statement said. The agency will determine his legal status.
The statement noted that Haykel speaks Arabic, English, French and Spanish. Photographs posted on a Mexican government Web site showed a middle-age man in a T-shirt and shorts. He appeared relaxed and smiling.
Last week, Mexican authorities detained a Pakistani man in Rosarito Beach following a tip from U.S. counterparts. Ali Durrani, 55, was deported from Mexico and taken into custody by U.S. authorities when his plane landed in Los Angeles. He has pleaded not guilty to U.S. charges of illegally exporting military jet engine parts. |
