Mayor To Step Down On Friday El Universal
| López Obrador presented local lawmakers with his resignation on Tuesday. He will now post his bid for the PRD's presidential candidacy. | Mexico City Mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent a letter to local lawmakers on Tuesday asking for permission to resign from his post so he can compete for his party's presidential nomination.
López Obrador, who polls place as the frontrunner to win the 2006 elections, will step down on Friday. He will have little competition in securing the candidacy for the Party of the Democratic RevLópez Obrador enjoys tremendous support within the PRD and in Mexico City, but a critical test will be his success in capturing voters in the north of the country where the PRD has little presence.
In the letter, he said he will give an address on the state of the capital the day he steps down .
If elected, López Obrador has pledged to modernize the energy sector without privatizing either electricity or petroleum production. Furthermore, he has said he would seek to eliminate petroleum imports within three years. He has also promised to create new jobs, stimulate housing construction and extend pensions for the elderly across the country.
López Obrador leads other likely candidates in the 2006 presidential race, according to the most recent Consulta Mitofsky poll. The outgoing mayor led the May opinion poll with 42.5 percent of respondents saying they will vote for him, up from 37 percent in February.
