López Obrador Registers His PRD Candidacy Wire services
| The capital mayor will face no competition within his party for the 2006 presidency. | The front-runner ahead of Mexico's 2006 presidential election formally registered his candidacy on Saturday, announcing plans for an austere, grass-roots campaign.
Andrés Manuel Lóppez Obrador, who stepped down Friday as Mexico City mayor, registered his candidacy at the headquarters of the leftists Democratic Revolution Party in Mexico City.
He so far faces no competition for the party's nomination, while rival parties are locked in fierce primary contests.
"We're going to do a campaign from the bottom up," said López Obrador, an outspoken champion of the poor who built a following as mayor with handouts to the elderly and disabled and large public works projects.
Leading national polls in the presidential race, López Obrador has promised to expand nationwide similar construction projects and cash payments to the elderly measures that critics hail as a return to Mexico's old-style politics. He also has pledged to cut the president's salary in half, a move that would reduce other top government salaries.
López Obrador addressed about 200 supporters outside party offices, where police closed off several lanes of traffic.
One man in the crowd handed the candidate a rooster as a token of support. |
