Ready for an Extension of Daylight Time? Canada.com
| The new bill, if approved by President Bush, would expand U.S. daylight-saving time by two months. | The U.S. Congress on Tuesday adopted a move to extend daylight hours by two months to help save energy, and some say Canada would need to follow suit to avoid chaos.
The new bill would move the start of daylight-saving time in the U.S. one month earlier to the first Sunday in March. The end of daylight time would be delayed one month to the last Sunday in November.
The new provision is part of a sweeping new energy plan proposed by a joint U.S. Senate-House committee.
If U.S. President Bush approves the bill, the new law would take effect immediately, extending daylight-saving time by one month this fall.
Canadian business leaders fear major economic disruption if Canada does not follow suit.
The Ontario Chamber of Commerce said airlines, transportation companies and the auto sector would be affected. And even the Toronto Stock Exchange would open and close one hour after New York's markets. |
