The Grand Sumo Championship will be staged October 7-9 at Mandalay Bay casino on the Las Vegas strip, the first major sumo tournament staged in the United States since June of 1985 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
"After our incredible experience in New York, it was just a matter of finding the perfect situation before we brought sumo back to America," producer Dan Yoshida said.
Asashoryu stands as the biggest man among the biggest men in sport. At 24, he has impressed Japan with his skill and is hoping to spread his fame and the sport to a greater global audience.
Organizers will have a special crew construct the dohyo, sumo ring, with the proper mix of clay and sand with rice and straw bales and a special roof over the ring imported from Japan to held preserve traditions dating back 1,500 years. |
