City Authorities Plan Malecon Extension

The coordinator of Tourist Projects from the State Government's Urban Development Secretariat, Eduardo Barraza, recently presented plans to extend the Malecon from the Cuale River footbridge to Lazaro Cardenas Park.
Puerto Vallarta - Last Tuesday at the Municipal Public Works office in City Hall, the coordinator of Tourist Projects from the State Government's Urban Development Secretariat, Eduardo Barraza, presented a draft of the plans to extend the Malecon from the Cuale River footbridge to Lazaro Cardenas Park.

The draft outlines the city's plans to extend the boardwalk toward the Romantic Zone down Olas Altas Street. Barraza explained the architectural characteristics of the project, as well as the way it could affect some properties along the path, to the group of restaurateurs and merchants that attended the meeting.

Remberto Quintero Gutiérrez, director of the Public Works Department, said that their intent was to present the plans to the owners of adjacent businesses, so that modifications relevant to existing businesses could be added to the project's final blueprint.

Gutiérrez pointed out that the meeting was attended by most of the owners of the locales, restaurants and hotels located along the proposed boardwalk, who all seemed to show their acceptance of the project, with just a few suggestions for improving some of the technical details and finishings. So far, project modifications include proper locales to accommodate vendors, and the building of public rest rooms along the walkway.

He added that the representative of Semarnat, Jesús Manuel Diaz Zurita, has been keeping a close eye on the project as it has evolved, to make sure that current Federal Zone concessions and the merchants who have worked in the area for years would not be displaced, but would only be required to relocate to the new locales being built for that purpose.

Quintero Gutiérrez said that another meeting with the project developers has been scheduled to take place in early September so all the suggestions for modifications made by all of the involved parties can be considered for inclusion in the final blueprint. He stated that the city's Urban Planning department will be seeking to incorporate the proposed underground parking lot at Lazaro Cardenas Park as an integral part of the final plans.

The functionary added that the amount of money needed to complete the project has not yet been determined. However, around $10.5 million pesos have already been earmarked for this purpose, five million of which would come from the federal government via the Tourism Ministry, as pledged by Minister Rodolfo Elizondo Torres on his recent visit to Puerto Vallarta.

He went on to say that if everything goes as planned, the final blueprints for the new Romantic Malecon project could be approved and completed as early as next month, and ground should be broken by October in order to access the federal funds that have already been earmarked for the project.
