TransCanada To Build $181 Million Pipeline In Mexico
email this pageprint this pageemail uspipline-news.com

TransCanada has been awarded a contract by Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) to construct, own and operate a natural gas pipeline in east-central Mexico. The 36-inch diameter, 75-mile pipeline will extend from the facilities of Pemex Gas near Naranjos, Veracruz and transport natural gas under a long-term (26 year) contract with the CFE to an electricity generation station near Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosi. TransCanada expects to invest approximately $181 million in the project.

The pipeline will be designed to transport initial volumes of 170 MMcf/d. Under the contract, the capacity of the Tamazunchale Pipeline will be expanded beginning in 2009 to approximately 430 MMcf/d to meet the needs of two additional proposed power plants near Tamazunchale. TransCanada will immediately commence project and construction activities with a planned in-service date of December 1, 2006.

TransCanada’s pipeline expertise includes significant experience in Mexico. The company was the project manager, operator and largest partner in the 700 km Energia Mayakan natural gas pipeline project in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula – the first pipeline of its kind in Mexico to have been awarded to the private sector. TransCanada was also the project manger, operator and owner of the 200 km El Bajio natural gas pipeline projet. TransCanada sold its interest in these projects in 2000.

In other news, PEMEX and its four divisions (Exploration and Production, Refining, Gas and Basic Petrochemicals, and Secondary Petrochemicals) are organizing the Seventh International Pipelines Conference and Exhibition that will take place Nov. 9-11 in the convention center of the city of Merida, State of Yucatan.

Included will be a series of seminars presented by PEMEX and executives from pipeline companies who will discuss current conditions in the international market and the strategies that they intend to use in the pipeline business. There will also be an exhibition showcasing the latest technologies and services for the installation of pipelines and distribution of gas, petroleum, and petrochemicals and environmental protection.
