Companies to Build Wind Power Plant

The Federal Electricity Commission has awarded a US111.4 million contract to Spain's Iberdrola SA and Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica SA to build a winddriven power plant.

In a statement on its website, the state-run utility said it expects the Spanish companies to take a little over a year to build the plant in the southern state of Oaxaca.

The 85-megawatt plant, known as La Venta II, should be up and running by Nov. 1, 2006. The area is also supplied by La Venta, a wind-powered plant that began operating in 1994.

"This plant will allow for diversification of energy sources through the use of clean energy that helps preserve the environment," the electricity utility, known as the CFE, said.

The CFE said that every 100 megawatts of wind power Mexico installs saves the country from burning 1.14 million barrels of crude a year and sending 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Spanish energy company Iberdrola has won a slew of contracts in Mexico in recent years. The company said earlier this month it expects to have invested US3.8 billion in the country by 2010.
