Local Charity Benefits Big at La Escondida Sports Bar Bob Cohen - PVNN
| Frequent PV visitors, Howard and Vicki Brody from Jacksonville, Florida, were the drivers for the charity/sports event to raise money for RISE. | In Puerto Vallarta's pickings for sports bars, a small popular one for locals and many multi-time visitors, La Escondida hosted its annual fundraising Sunday football event this past weekend. It was billed as Margarita Madness/Fundraiser Party. La Escondida at Jacarandas #210, Colonia Emiliano Zapata owned and operated by Suzanne Lilly, is a popular spot to drink, eat, and watch sports and most of all catch up with old friends.
Her dad, Dave is a most able second mate and makes the family venture a family type sports bar. A local bulletin posting board on the internet has connected close to a thousand Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors, many involved in fundraising events.
This year RISE (Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza) was the beneficiary of the drunken football fans and friends. RISE is a non-profit shelter for babies and children under the age of 14 that are orphans, abused, neglected or simply abandoned. Forty five items were donated by frequent Vallarta visitors, Howard and Vicki Brody to be raffled off during the festivities, hosted by the bar owner. The Brodys of Jacksonville, Florida and Lorne and Paula Migheti (in absentia) graciously purchased all the drinks for the house from 1 pm - 4 pm and La Escondida and others catered the affair with quite a delicious spread.
Close to 75 people bought raffle tickets and donated money to the cause while screaming for their teams during the football games. The goal was to raise 10,000 pesos for RISE and all the patrons were dressed in their best shorts and T shirts for the gala event. The only downside was that the Brody's hometown team, the Jacksonville Jaguars were nipped by St. Louis 24-21. On a timely note, the missing Lorne and Paula were apparently at home birthing a child and their kind contribution is one of extreme gratitude for those kids are not as fortunate.
As usual, whatever teams won or lost were secondary, the big winner was RISE. The goal of 10,000 pesos was on the money as some late donations filtered in. A big thank you to all involved, and when you're in the neighborhood, stop in and say hi to Suzanne. |
