Third Telethon Foundation Golf Tournament Big Success PVNN
Puerto Vallarta - On October 7th and 8th, Club de Golf Vista Vallarta played host to the 3rd Telethon Foundation Golf Tournament. Sponsored by various local organizations, such as the Tourism Trust of Puerto Vallarta, Mercedes Benz and CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort, the event turned out to be quite a success.
The Telethon Foundation organizes events designed to raise funds for the rehabilitation of handicapped children at Rehabilitación Infantil Teletón Centers throughout Mexico, where about 2.7 million children have some kind of handicap. Each year, $47 Million Pesos are needed to cover the operating costs of the Telethon Rehabilitation Centers, and this cause, which originated in Chile, was adopted by Mexico due to the public awareness these types of events raise.
Today, 2100 children are being attended to in Telethon centers across the country. The approximate cost of fulfilling each child's therapeutic needs is $23,000 Pesos. With 1600 minors still on this year's waiting list, the foundation has set their sites on raising $305 Million and one Pesos this year.
During a recent press conference Executive Director of Telethon West, Ignacio González López commented, "This 3rd Telethon Foundation Golf Tournament in Puerto Vallarta gave the Foundation's efforts a boost throughout Mexico. We began with only 8 sponsors in the country."
Holding the tournament at Club de Golf Vista Vallarta also promoted Puerto Vallarta as an important destination on a national level. Members of the national press covered the golf tournament, broadcasting live from the golf course. Mexican actresses Yadira Carrillo, Patricia Manterola, Mónica Sánchez, Jacqueline Bracamontes, Patricia Navidad and other well-known celebrities also made appearances.
The tournament was a huge success with approximately 114 golfers participating in the tournament, which raised about $500,000 pesos from registration fees alone. During the tournament's inauguration, a member of the Telethon Foundation Patronage, Fernando Landeros, stated that it is imperative to involve the business sector of the country for this type of event. "We realized that a large percentage of the donations have come from people of little means, so it is very important to encourage business participation," he said.
Thanks to the business community's participation, prizes of trophies, Mercedes Benz automobiles for any Hole-in-One, and a raffle for a Smart Roadster Coupe were all made possible for tournament participants. Winning teams led by Salvador Milanés, Mario Domínguez and Luis Humberto Peralta were presented with their prizes by Sergio Bustamante and TV star Jacqueline Bracamontes during the Awards Dinner held at the CasaMagna Marriott Resort on Saturday, October 8th.
