Vallarta Yacht Club Pasta Dinner and Slide Show

Coming About women's sailing school and the Vallarta Yacht Club will be hosting a pasta dinner and slide show, "The Rescue of the Arion" with Lloyd Halverson.
Puerto Vallarta - On October 17th at 6:00 pm [Vallarta time] at the Paradise Village Yacht Club in Nuevo Vallarta, the Coming About women's sailing school and the Vallarta Yacht Club will be hosting a pasta dinner and slide show, "The Rescue of the Arion" with Lloyd Halverson.

Halverson and his wife, Judy, enjoyed many adventures on their 12-year odyssey circumnavigating the globe aboard his junk rigged schooner "Batwing" - many of them with Coming About managing director Pat Henry, one of the world's first female circumnavigators. Readers of Henry's "By the Grace of the Sea" have met Lloyd and Judy many times - in the Indian Ocean, Yemen, Eritrea and Turkey.

But perhaps Lloyd's most challenging and rewarding experience was the rescue of Ian McNair, a shipwrecked sailor. McNair had been stranded on the remote South Pacific atoll of Suvarov for three months after his boat was severely damaged from running aground on a reef.

While sailing alone, Halverson found him. The two men spent the next four months salvaging and rebuilding the vessel using limited supplies and hand tools. During that four-month period, Halverson and McNair lived off the land, spearing shark, foraging crab and collecting seabird eggs for food and catching rain from passing squalls for fresh water.

The last time the Halversons were in PV was in 1998, when they were making their way back to Seattle to close the circle on their circumnavigation. They have recently returned to Puerto Vallarta to visit with fellow circumnavigator and sailing friend Pat Henry and share their stories and slides with members of the yacht club.

The public is invited to join club members for this memorable evening with a fine story teller. Dinner will be served at 6 pm (Jalisco time) and the program will begin at 7 pm. Reservations are required for dinner and may be made by calling the yacht club at 297-2222 or by emailing office@vallartayachtclub.com.
