(Photo: El Universal) | The U.S. government has pledged aid to Mexico to help areas hit hard by Hurricane Stan, just weeks after Mexican military missions went to the United States to assist with reconstruction after Hurricane Katrina.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said it was donating US100,000 in household items.
In a prepared statement, Ambassador Tony Garza said the aid was "a simple but sincere way of recognizing and thanking once again the people and government of Mexico for their solidarity in recent months."
President Vicente Fox, touring hard-hit areas in Veracruz, said U.S. authorities with instructions from President George W. Bush were putting together the aid package.
"Helping neighbors pays, and it pays well," Fox said.
He added rescue and aid efforts were being hampered by the persistent rains and clouds across the nation's south.
The weather "is not allowing aircraft or helicopters to land and so our capacity to act is limited," he said in an interview with Televisa.
Two planes loaded with emergency supplies were set to fly to southern states on Thursday.
Despite the widespread damage at home, Mexico had already pledged aid to Central American neighbors. |
